v2 is closing in

Our spring break turned into a winter break but we are back!

Next release, v2, is in internal beta and is due to release soon after we ensure everything works as it should.

The biggest change will be new mapstyle which will likely replace the up-to-down map view for most users. The new stye is a 3d map with elevation and includes the typical elevation queries on click just like the old map style. This consumes much more network traffic and just in case you don’t like it, we keep the option to operate always on the old flat map if you like. We aso added cache, so once you view a location, you can view it again without internet. You can change the cache setting and the map style anytime in the settings, if you like the old map more.

The main point about the new 3d map style is to make it easier to pinpoint the highest locations around you so you can query their elevation. This used to be blind operation and you never knew if you hit the right spot. Also, the 3d map is just so cool to explore, you can finally see what is behind that mountain and where does that ridge go.

One of the most requested feature was search option to the map. We were able to add this but only to the old flat map due to licencing. We will roll out search capability also to the 3d elevation map but that will not be included in this upcoming release since we need more time to prepare our backend servers for the address search stuff.

Other changes will be just moving things around a bit to make some stuff make more sense and to safeguard some operations. We had one user reporting that their highest elevation record was lost due to some bug, this is unacceptable and we improved the way the highest records are saved and this operation is much more safe now. Together with this, we send crash reports and some other error anonymously to firebase for analysis, you can read more in our privacy policy.

Just to write out as some of you have asked privacy related questions:

  • We do not store your current location anywhere, it never leaves the device.

  • We do not map who is asking which locations elevation
